About LAWA

LAWA was founded in 1987 by Latin American women who came as political refugees to the United Kingdom. For more than 30 years, LAWA has worked tirelessly to make this world a place where women and children are free from violence and oppression and can achieve their right to self-determination.

We offer holistic and intersectional services ranging from two emergency refuge homes, advice and support, crèche, English classes, counselling, a Change Maker empowerment program, a housing policy project (WAHA) and children and young people´s services.

Working together with Latin American and other Spanish and Portuguese speaking Black and Minority Ethnic women and children to end violence and achieve self-determination.

Our ethics
and values

We pursue our mission by putting into practice the ethics and values ​​of sorority rooted in both intersectional feminism and community feminism. Based on the traditions of black feminism, we recognize the role played by intersectional identities in people’s lives. Therefore, we base LAWA’s work on an intersectional approach, to support women through our services, while recognizing their right to self-determination.

In the same way, we integrate our ethics and practices in Latin American community feminism, which originated with indigenous women in Bolivia and Guatemala. This means that our feminist practice is built within the community through collective, rather than individual, approaches to change, and using popular creative methodologies that are accessible to all. It is from this communitarian and decolonial feminist position that, as Latin American women, we recognize our history and struggle against on-going colonialist-patriarchal forms of violence and oppression.

LAWA’s staff team

Our organization is led by and for Latin American, Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) women. Each and every one of our workers, volunteers and board members represents the spirit of LAWA by committing to fulfil our vision and mission.

Our team is compound by 14 incredible women from different Latin American and BME backgrounds and different professional fields. They have experience in areas such as Gender Violence advising, counselling, monitoring and evaluation, refuge management or community engagement, and by working together at LAWA, they provide support to over 800 women per year.

LAWA is a Living Wage Employer accredited by the Living Wage Foundation. We consider the race and gender of our candidates as an occupational requirement in accordance with paragraph 1, Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010.

LAWA´s Board

LAWA’s Board of Trustees is made up of seven migrant and Latin American women who work in different sectors in the United Kingdom such as finance, marketing, and the charity sector. Each of the members bring unique values to the Board, making the staff not only our governing body, but also an excellent support team for our daily activities.
